Samford Turns Back Volleyball in Five

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Junior outside hitter Radka Dimitrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) hammered a career-high and team season-high 26 kills, but it wasn't enough as the Jacksonville University volleyball team fell to Samford, 3-2 (30-22, 30-32, 30-27, 26-30, 15-12), in Atlantic Sun Conference action Saturday at Seibert Hall. Dimitrova also hit .328 for the match and added nine digs and four blocks.
Sophomore outside hitter Candice Rose (Mechanicsville, Md.) had 14 kills and eight digs, while senior middle hitter Brooke Ahrens (Benson, Ill.) recorded 10 kills, seven digs and six blocks. Junior setter Melissa Bullion (Alvin, Texas) tallied a career-high 59 assists and 11 digs, while sophomore libero Kelly Ryals (Gainesville, Fla.) led the Dolphins defensively with 16 digs. JU racked up 16.0 blocks and were led by senior outside hitter Kristy Smith (Carleton, Mich.), who had nine, and freshman middle blocker Danielle Neville (Greenwood Village, Colo.), who had eight.
The Dolphins (9-12, 4-4 A-Sun) hit .207 for the match, while Samford (10-11, 2-5) hit .218. The Bulldogs were led by Alyssa Whitehead, who had 24 kills and 17 digs, and Hilary Gary, who had 20 kills. Krista Kettering tallied 67 assists, while Brooke Berryman and Stefanie Pickett each recorded double-digit kills.
JU will hit the road for Nashville, Tenn., next weekend to face Belmont on Friday at 7 p.m. in A-Sun play, then take on Lipscomb, which will join the A-Sun next season, on Saturday at 3 p.m.
