Radka Dimitrova Leads JU Volleyball To Sweep Over Bethune-Cookman, 3-0

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior outside hitter Radka Dimitrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) hit .515 for the match, slammed 20 kills and had 11 digs to lead the Jacksonville University volleyball team to a 30-21, 30-27, 30-22 sweep over Bethune-Cookman in the Dolphins' home finale Wednesday night at Swisher Gymnasium. Dimitrova's 20 kills were one shy of the JU record for a three-game match, and she recorded her sixth double-double in the Dolphins' last eight matches.

Wednesday night's match was the final home match for JU's four seniors. Middle hitter Brooke Ahrens (Benson, Ill.), the only four-year Dolphin on the team hit .500, hammered 13 kills and had two blocks. Outside hitter Alesha Rodriguez (Cleveland, Ohio) had five kills and six digs, while outside hitter Kristy Smith (Carleton, Mich.) had three kills and five digs. Setter Kristin Withrow (St. Petersburg, Fla.) suffered a shoulder injury on the first play of the match and did not return. Junior setter Melissa Buillion (Alvin, Texas) came off the bench to hand out 46 assists and added four kills and six digs.

The Dolphins (12-12) hit .364 for the match, while holding Bethune-Cookman (8-18) to a .142 hitting percentage. The Lady Wildcats were led by Melissa Sanders and Irie Cormier, who had eight kills each.

JU will wrap up the 2002 season with three matches on the road next. The Dolphins, who must win one of their two remaining Atlantic Sun Conference matches to secure a spot in the conference championship, get their first crack against Florida Atlantic on Friday at 7 p.m. in Boca Raton, Fla. JU faces Florida A&M Tuesday, followed by a showdown with league-leading UCF to end the year on Friday, Nov. 8.
