Volleyball Clinches Spot in A-Sun Championship With 3-2 Victory Over First-Place UCF

ORLANDO, Fla. - Junior outside hitter Radka Dimitrova (Sofia, Bulgaria) had a match-high 24 kills and 16 digs and senior middle hitter Brooke Ahrens (Benson, Ill.) added 20 kills as the Jacksonville University volleyball team fought past first-place UCF, who was previously undefeated in Atlantic Sun Conference play, 3-2 (25-30, 30-24, 32-30, 25-30, 15-10), Friday night at UCF Arena. With the victory the Dolphins (14-13, 7-4 A-Sun) clinch a spot in the A-Sun Championship Nov. 22-23 in Orlando.
Freshman middle blocker Danielle Neville (Greenwood Village, Colo.) hit .417 for the match, had a career-high 12 kills and seven blocks (two solo), while senior outside hitter Kristy Smith (Carleton, Mich.) had 12 kills and a career-high 23 digs. The Dolphins hit .245 for the match, led by Ahrens, who hit .421, Neville and Dimitrova (.254). Junior setter Melissa Bullion (Alvin, Texas) had a career-high 67 assists, which set the JU record for a five game match, and 14 digs, while senior outside hitter Alesha Rodriguez (Cleveland, Ohio) and sophomore libero Kelly Ryals (Gainesville, Fla.) each had double-digit digs.
UCF (18-11, 9-1) had two players record triple-doubles as Emily Watts recorded 17 kills, 21 digs and 11 assists and setter Jenny Frank had 16 kills, 50 assists and 17 digs. Tanya Jarvis, Amanda Stoutjesdyk and Chaz Arah each had double-digit kills for the Golden Knights.
The Dolphins, who defeated the Golden Knights for the first time since 1989, return to action in the first round of the A-Sun Tournament Friday, Nov. 22, at UCF Arena.
