July 29, 2004

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Dolphin volleyball has signed 5-foot-11 outside hitter Joanna Silva (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and 6-foot-1 middle blocker Katie Hendrian (Cincinnati, Ohio) to National Letters of Intent, first-year head coach Kevin Paul announced today. The duo will join a veteran roster, which earned its third straight postseason berth last season after placing third in the Atlantic Sun Conference with an 8-2 league mark.

Silva, a 2003 Region II All-Region and National Junior College Athletic Association All-America selection, joins the program after leading the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith to a pair of Region II and Bi-State Conference titles in 2002 and 2003 and the Junior College National Tournament each year. Silva was also named team MVP as a sophomore after leading the squad in kills, digs and passing. A graduate of Rio de Janeiro - RJ in 2001, she competed in Brazil's highest level of club competition since the age of seven.

"Joanna will bring a great deal of ball control and experience to our outside hitting position," said Paul. "She has a variety of shots and is a great passer, which will help us improve offensively. As a Junior College All-American, we will look for her experience and leadership to make an immediate impact."

Hendrian, the Dolphins' lone freshman in 2004, led Seton High School to a pair of Ohio Div I section and district titles and was selected for the Southwest Ohio Volleyball Coaches Association Senior Showcase in 2003. Hendrian, who also garnered Southwest Ohio All-Academic honors as a senior, did not miss a game during her prep career.

At the club level, she competed two years for Bluechip Volleyball Club (1999-00), Mizuno Cincy Classics Volleyball Club (2001-02) and Cincy Volleyball Club (2003-04). Hendrian led Mizuno to a 2001 USA Volleyball Junior Olympic National Championship and the 2002 USAV Junior Olympic Invitational.
