Volleyball Falls to Ohio, 3-0, at the Furman Invitational

GREENVILLE, S.C. - The JU volleyball team combined for a -.036 hitting percentage while Ohio University hit .396 with three players registering double-digit kills as the Bearcats defeated the Dolphins, 3-0 (30-11, 30-19, 30-13), Friday evening in the first day of the Furman Volleyball Invitational in Greenville, S.C. The Dolphins, who played their first match of 2004 after four cancellations last week, fall to 0-1 on the season while the Bearcats improve to 4-1.

Sophomore outside hitters Petya Borisova (Sofia, Bulgaria) and Eva Stoilova (Sofia, Bulgaria) each led the Dolphins' offense with five kills. Sophomore setter Erin Hickman (San Antonio, Texas) finished with a team-high 14 assists and three blocks while senior libero Kelly Ryals (Gainesville, Fla.) added nine digs.

Ohio's Julia Winkfield (11), Melissa Griffin (11) and Stephanie Blackburn (10) set the offensive pace in kills for the Bearcats while setter Briana Adamovsky racked up a match-high 39 assists. Ashley Elliot also added a match-high four blocks.

Ohio dominated the contest as the Bearcats combined to hit .556 (20-3-30) in game one, .310 (16-3-42) in game two and .345 (15-5-29) in the final frame. In game one, Ohio took an early 10-3 lead before Griffin, Winkfield and Blackburn combined for four straight points to put the game out of reach. After another slow start in game two, the Dolphins made a 12-8 run to erase a 19-6 deficit but could not overcome 13 attack errors as the Bearcats took control. JU also made a late rally in the final set but could not overcome an early 19-3 deficit.

The Dolphins will conclude the weekend with two matches on Saturday, Sept. 11, in Timmons Arena beginning with host Furman at noon. JU will then play its final match of the tournament against Mercer at 3 p.m.
