Volleyball Battles But Falls to Belmont, 3-1

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Sophomore outside hitter Petya Borisova (15 kills, 13 digs) and junior setter Erin Donivan (38 assists, 15 digs) led the Dolphins with double-doubles but the JU volleyball team fell to Atlantic Sun Conference foe Belmont, 3-1 (32-34, 30-28, 18-30, 18-30), Friday evening at the Curb Event Center. For Borisova, a native of Sofia, Bulgaria, it marked the third-consecutive match in which she has recorded a double-double. The Dolphins, who had their two-match winning streak snapped, fall to 2-9 overall and 1-2 in the A-Sun while the Bruins improve to 12-3, 2-0.

Junior middle hitter Danielle Neville (Greenwood Village, Colo.) also contributed to the JU offense with eight kills, three service aces and a .533 hitting percentage (8-0-15) while senior libero Kelly Ryals (16) and junior outside hitter Joanna Silva (11) helped the Dolphin defense with double-digit digs. Silva also finished with a season-high three aces. The Dolphins were outhit by the Bruins (.307-1.85) and Belmont also dominated the net with 12.0 blocks to JU's 4.0.

Lindsey Cleveland (22 kills, 11 digs), Colleen Nilson (64 assists, 14 digs) and Erin Janson (12 kills, 10 digs) led the Bruins with double-doubles on the evening while Brittany Card led the defense with a match-high 20 digs. Sara Jacobsen added 13 kills and a .481 hitting percentage (13-0-27).

Both squads were evenly matched through the first two games as the two squads were even at 1-1. Belmont took control of the match in games 3-4 by outhitting the Dolphins, .405-.200, in game three and .421-.105 in the final frame.

JU will continue A-Sun play against Lipscomb on Saturday, Oct. 2, at 8 p.m. in Allen Arena.
