Volleyball Sweeps By Gardner-Webb, 3-0

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore outside hitter Eva Stoilova (Sofia, Bulgaria) finished with a team-high eight kills and nine digs, junior setter Erin Donivan (Sarasota, Fla.) set 23 assists and junior middle hitter Lindsay Ward (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) added eight blocks to lead the JU volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-22, 30-21, 30-21) win over Gardner-Webb in an Atlantic Sun Conference match, Saturday evening at Swisher Gymnasium. The Dolphins extended their season-high winning streak to five matches, with six wins in their last seven, while also registering their fourth sweep in their last five contests. JU improved to 7-9 overall and 5-2 in the A-Sun while Gardner-Webb falls to 4-19, 0-7.
Freshman middle hitter Katie Hendrian (Cincinnati, Ohio) finished with six kills while junior outside hitter Joanna Silva (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) and senior libero Kelly Ryals (Gainesville, Fla.) each added seven digs. JU used its bench extensively in the contest after playing a five-game contest against Campbell the night before. The Dolphins outhit the Runnin' Bulldogs (.194-.000) and dominated at the net with 13.0 blocks to Gardner-Webb's 4.0.
Maggie Cornwall finished with a match-high 11 kills while Melanie Custer dished out a match-high 30 assists to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs.
In game one, JU took advantage of early errors by the Bulldogs to take a 5-2 lead. After Gardner-Webb cut the margin to 7-5 on a kill by Cornwall, the Dolphins went on a 13-4 run to increase their lead to 20-9. The Bulldogs chipped their way back to a 29-22 deficit but an attack error by Custer gave JU the game.
In game two, the Dolphins capitalized on Gardner-Webb errors to take an early 7-2 advantage. Gardner-Webb would get no closer than seven points for the remainder of the frame as JU took a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the final frame, Gardner-Webb took advantage of three consecutive Dolphin errors to take a 6-2 lead. JU tied the match at 13-13 after an attack error by Ashley Pridgeon and then took its first lead of the game on Donivan's ace. After the Bulldogs evened the game at 15-15, the Dolphins used a 7-0 run to lead 22-15. Gardner-Webb made it 27-21 after an attack error by sophomore hitter Petya Borisova (Sofia, Bulgaria) but JU finished with a 3-0 run to end the match.
JU will next travel to Georgia Southern on Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m. for a non-conference match at Paul Porter Arena.
