Volleyball Earns A-Sun Championship Bid With 3-0 Win Over Stetson

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore outside hitter Eva Stoilova (Sofia, Bulgaria) led the Dolphins with 16 kills while adding 11 digs for her fourth double-double of the season to lead the Jacksonville University volleyball team to a 3-0 (30-21, 30-24, 30-20) win over Stetson, Saturday afternoon in an Atlantic Sun Conference match at Swisher Gymnasium. With the victory, JU increased its conference win streak to five matches and gave the Dolphins their fifth consecutive A-Sun Championship bid. Last season, JU set the program record for most consecutive conference victories with six. The Dolphins improve to 8-10 overall and 6-2 in the A-Sun while Stetson falls to 6-11, 3-5.

Senior outside hitter Candice Rose (Mechanicsville, Md.) also finished with double-digit kills (11) while sophomore outside hitter Petya Borisova (Sofia, Bulgaria) recorded a team-high 13 digs. Junior setter Erin Donivan (Sarasota, Fla.) finished with 40 assists, six digs, four kills, three blocks and three service aces while junior middle hitter Danielle Neville (Greenwood Village, Colo.) added nine kills, a match-high .750 hitting percentage (9-0-12) and six blocks. The Dolphins dominated the contest in hitting percentage, .290-.111, and blocks, 10.0-4.0.

Kira Smedley led the Hatters with eight kills and 13 digs while Liz Gorski also added double-digit digs with 11. Melissa Muller (14) and Rachael Miller (13) led the squad in assists.

In game one, Stetson took a 6-3 advantage after a hitting error by Borisova but the Dolphins responded with an 8-4 run to take an 11-10 lead. With Neville serving, the Dolphins ran off four consecutive points to increase their lead to 15-10. Neither team would make a run for the rest of the game as JU took a 1-0 match lead after a service ace by Donivan.

In game two, both teams exchanged leads early on before the Hatters used a 3-0 run to lead 10-7. Stetson increased the lead to 13-9 after a blocking error by Donivan but the Dolphins responded with an 8-3 run to take a 17-16 lead on a service ace by junior outside hitter Joanna Silva (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). The Hatters would tie the game on two more occasions before JU went on a 7-0 run to take a 27-20 advantage. Junior middle hitter Lindsay Ward (Fernandina Beach, Fla.) gave the Dolphins a 2-0 lead in the match with a game-ending kill.

In game three, Stetson jumped out to an early 6-2 lead before JU used a 14-2 run to take a 16-8 lead. The Hatters answered with a 5-0 lead to cut the deficit to 16-13 but the Dolphins regained their grip on the game with a 5-0 run to lead 21-13. The Hatters would only get as close as six points (23-17) as JU ended the contest on a 7-3 run to win the match.

JU will return to its non-conference schedule against Bethune-Cookman on Monday, Oct. 25, at 7:30 p.m. in Swisher Gymnasium.
