Volleyball Gets Out in the Community with Carwash Fundraiser

Aug. 14, 2005

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU volleyball team rolled up their sleeves and got dirty on Saturday with the first of two fundraising carwashes at Sam's Club on Beach Boulevard. Head coach Kevin Paul, assistant coach Cerina Pele and 10 members of the Dolphin squad washed cars, on a donation base only, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and also handed out schedules for the 2005 season on Saturday.

Sam's Club made its parking lot available to the team after Pele sent a letter to the regional staff/marking office explaining the purpose of the car wash and its benefits. She later met with the community involvement coordinator to get permission for the fundraiser. After the date was set, the team was given time off from their practice schedule to make poster boards and advertise for the fundraiser.

On the day of the carwash, two players promoted the carwash at the parking entrance of Beach Boulevard and two players stood near the exit of the building to lead people near the location of the car wash.

"This was a good opportunity to bond as a team away from the gym and get involved in the community," said Paul. "It was nice to see the team having fun out there and hopefully it will create a bigger fan base for us."

The Dolphins will their second and final carwash before the season on Saturday, Aug. 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sam's Club on Beach Boulevard.
