Volleyball opens fall practice

After a summer off, Swisher Gymnasium will be dormant no more as the JU volleyball team opens preseason camp under the direction of fourth-year head coach Shaun Kupferberg.

Last year, the Dolphins reached 20 win for the first time since 1988 and finished with their lowest loss total in the Division I era. In three years under Kupferberg, JU has also increased its win total each year – 18 (2006), 19 (2007) and 20 (2008) while reaching the A-Sun Tournament Championship Match in back-to-back seasons (2007-08) for the first time in program history.

“We’re very excited to get back in the gym and prepare for this year,” said Kupferberg. “The energy on the court was great this morning and we’ve got two weeks to get game ready.”

The Dolphins will return eight players from last season including senior libero Shelley Walroth, who earned first team all-conference and Defensive “Player of the Year” accolades after ranking fourth in the nation with an average of 5.87 digs per set. The returning core also includes senior outside hitter Brooke Singleton, senior middle blocker Nicki Kent, junior outside hitters Brittany Lehman and Aidan Yeager and junior setter Hannah Munneke. Sophomore libero Ashley August and sophomore outside hitter Kathryn Kane will also add to the experienced depth of the squad.

Among the new faces will be freshman transfer Alliya Dzrewiecki (Florida State) along with freshmen Alison Loeppky (Winnipeg, Manitoba), Megan Gorey (Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.) and Nicole Teplitz (Stuart, Fla.).

JU will host its annual Alumni Game on Saturday, Aug. 22, at 5 p.m. in Swisher Gymnasium before opening the season at UCF in the Radisson-UCF Invitational on Friday, Aug. 28, at 1 p.m.
