Volleyball defeats Alumni in preseason warm up
The JU volleyball team got its first game experience of the year while 14 former Dolphins returned to campus as the 2009 squad won a spirited match over the JU Alumni, Saturday evening at Swisher Gymnasium.
The JU Alumni squad consisted of Brooke (Ahrens) Roach (OH, 1999-02), Carrie (Arago) Palmi (OH, 1998-00), Petya Borisova (OH, 2003-06), Jacklyn Buran (MB, 1998-01), Kerstin Erickson (OH, 2003-04), Brooke Jackson (MH, 2001), Danielle (Neville) Bense (MH, 2002-05), Katie O’Brien (DS/S, 2006-07), Aleisha Rodriguez (OH/MH, 2001-02), Candice Rose (OH, 2001-04), Kelly Ryals (LIB/OH, 2000-04), Kristy Smith (OH, 2001-02), Lindsay Ward (MH, 2002-05) and Kristin (Withrow) Chapman (S, 2001-02).
“It’s always fun for us to bring back our Alumni and have a fun night,” said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. “We started this event up last year and had about 10 former players come out. We had 14 this year, enough for two teams, so the word is starting to spread and more people are coming back to campus.
“This also gives us an opportunity to play someone other than ourselves before we open the season. I was glad to see our kids get some action but obviously there are a few more kinks to work out before we get started next weekend.”
In the first set, Arago gave the Alumni to a 1-0 lead with a dump kill but the Dolphins answered with a 3-0 run and opened up a 7-3 on a kill by sophomore outside hitter Kathryn Kane. Borisova notched a kill to cut the lead to 10-5 and the Alumni would use a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 10-9 on kills by Jackson and Erickson. The Dolphins would answer with a 4-0 run, capped by an ace by junior middle blocker Brittany Lehman, to make it 14-9. A block assist by senior middle blocker Nicki Kent and junior outside hitter Aidan Yeager made it 16-10 and the Dolphins would use a 9-3 run to close out the set.
In the second frame, Ward put the Alumni up early again with a kill before the Dolphins took a 3-2 lead on a kill by Lehman. A kill by Neville evened things up for the Alumni, 3-3, but the Dolphins used a 3-1 run to make it 6-4 on a kill by Kane. A kill by Ryals tied things up, 6-6, and the Alumni would answer three more times with kills by Rose and a Rodriguez and a block assist by Ward and Neville to even the score. A two more kills by Gorey increased the margin to 17-5 and the Dolphins would cruise to a 25-10 win.
In the fourth frame, JU took an early 4-1 lead on a kill by Yeager but kill by Rose evened the contest, 6-6, to cap a 5-2 run by the Alumni. In the fifth set, both teams would trade points until the Dolphins took a 5-2 lead on a kill by senior outside hitter Brooke Singleton. The Alumni would cut the deficit to 5-4 with kills by Smith and Jackson but the Dolphins would answer with a 4-0 run to take a 9-4 advantage. An ace by Smith would cut the margin to 9-6 but the Dolphins would answer with a 2-0 run to make it 11-6.
