Junior outside hitter Kathryn Kane tallied 10 kills and 10 digs for her third consecutive double-double and the JU volleyball team snapped its three-match skid with a 3-1 (25-12, 25-23, 19-25, 25-17) win over USC Upstate, Saturday afternoon at Swisher Gymnasium.

JU (11-11, 3-3) ended its longest losing streak in conference play since 2006 by tallying match highs in hitting percentage (.292), blocks (12) and aces (8).

USCU (7-14, 1-5) hit a match-high .321 in the third frame to continue the contest but the Spartans could not overcome a .138 hitting percentage overall.

“We got back on track today so that was good to see,” said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. “With two non-conference matches coming up next week, it will allow us to look at some things before head back into conference again.”

Along with Kane, senior outside hitter Aidan Yeager notched 10 kills and a match-high .444 (10-2-18) hitting percentage. Senior middle hitter Brittany Lehman added nine kills, five digs and two blocks while junior libero Ashley August (12 digs) and freshman middle blocker Kylie Jacob (five blocks) led the defense.

Cori Harris led the Spartans with a match-high 21 kills while also adding 13 digs and four service aces. Emily Sanders paced the squad with a match-high 43 assists and 17 digs. Morgan Thomas also added seven kills and four blocks.

In the first set, JU jumped out to an early 7-2 lead on a kill by sophomore middle blocker Alison Loeppky. The Dolphins increased the margin to 19-7 after an attack error by Katie Downey and then each teams traded points until a kill by Kane to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, both teams went through 13 ties throughout the contest until JU used a 3-1 run to end the frame and give JU a 2-0 lead heading into the break.

In the third frame, Upstate jumped out to an 8-1 lead on a kill by Thomas and then increased the margin to 17-7 with an ace by Harris. The Dolphins answered back with a 10-3 run, capped by a kill by Yeager, to cut the deficit to 20-17. The Spartans would counter with a 5-2 run to end the frame and cut the margin to 2-1 in the match.

In the final frame, both teams battled through six ties in the early going until the Dolphins used a 4-0 run to open up an 11-7 advantage on a kill by Loeppky. JU would use an 8-2 run to increase the margin to 19-9 on an ace by Courtney. Both teams would trade points the rest of the way until an attack error by Harris sealed the match for JU.

The Dolphins will play two more non-conference matches at Swisher Gymnasium next week beginning with UNF in the first installment of the SunTrust River City Rumble. The contest can be followed on ASun.TV by logging onto JUDolphins.com.
