Volleyball ends Orange and Green Challenge with a 3-0 loss to Hofstra

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - Freshman Hannah Munneke notched her third consecutive double-double with 32 assists and 10 digs while freshman outside hitter Brittany Lehman finished with 10 kills as the JU volleyball team fell to Hofstra, 3-0 (26-30, 25-30, 23-30), Saturday evening in the second day of the Orange and Green Challenge at the Knights Sports Complex.
"Hofstra reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament last season and they showed it this weekend," said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. "I thought we played well this weekend and we improved with each match. Unfortunately, our opponents got tougher as we went along as well."
Lehman, who was named to the al-tournament team, led the Dolphins (0-3) with a team-best .308 hitting percentage (10-2-26). Sophomore libero Michelle Walroth led the defense with 14 digs and junior outside hitter Sara Bendorf finished with 12 digs and eight kills. Freshman outside hitter Aidan Yeager added a match-high five digs and seven kills.
"Michelle had an amazing tournament for us by digging everything that came at her and she passed extremely well," Kupferberg said. "Brittany also played well this weekend and led us in hitting percentage."
Lauren Engle led Hofstra (3-0) with a match-high 14 kills and Harmonie Calinda added 13 kills to round out the Pride offense. Shellane Ogoshi finished with a match-high 18 digs to lead the defense.
In game one, JU took an early 3-1 lead after consecutive attack errors by the Pride but Hofstra used a 10-3 run to take an 11-6 advantage. The Dolphins took at 14-12 lead with a 6-1 run but Hofstra answered with a 6-1 run of their own to lead 18-15. JU cut the margin to 18-17 but the Pride used a 6-0 run, while taking advantage of a .029 hitting percentage by the Dolphins, to take control of the game.
In the second game, both teams were evenly matched offensively as Hofstra hit .220 from the floor compared to .237 by the Dolphins. JU lead early once again, 3-1, but the Pride used a 9-3 run to lead 10-6. JU battled back to tie the game on two occasions before taking a 17-15 lead on a hitting error by Amanda Beyersdorff. Hofstra recaptured the lead with a 4-0 run (19-17) and held on to a pair of one-point advantages while sealing the game with a late 4-0 run after leading 23-22.
In the final game, Hofstra tallied a match-high .286 hitting percentage to seal the tournament win. Both teams went through four ties and three lead changes before the Pride ran away with the game on a 7-0 run to take a 20-11 advantage. The Dolphins would never get any closer than four points for the remainder of the game.
JU will return to the friendly confines of Swisher Gymnasium as the Dolphins host their home opener against Georgia on Aug. 30 at 7 p.m.
