Volleyball ends road trip with 3-1 win over UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Junior outside hitter Sara Bendorf, freshman outside hitter Brittany Lehman and freshman setter Hannah Munneke each finished with double-doubles to lead the JU volleyball team to a win over UNC Ashville, 3-1 (28-30, 30-24, 30-27, 30-20), Sunday afternoon in the finale of a three-match road swing in the Justice Center.
JU (7-9) dominated every aspect of the match with highs of 74 kills, 70 assists, five aces, 81 digs, 10 blocks and a .253 (74-27-186) hitting percentage. UNC Asheville (6-11) got a match-high 21 kills by Lauren Ficker.
Bendorf led the Dolphin offense with 19 kills while helping the defense with a career-high 21 digs. Lehman added 16 kills and 10 digs to tally her second double-double of the season. Munneke dished out a season-high 68 assists to go with 10 digs for her sixth double-double.
Senior middle blocker Melissa Merchant finished with 12 kills and five blocks while freshman middle blocker Abby Gruenbacher tallied 11 kills to round out the Dolphins in double figures. Sophomore libero Michelle Walroth registered a match-high 30 digs for her fourth 30 dig effort of the year. Senior outside hitter Katie Hendrian also added nine kills seven digs and a match-high .471 (9-1-17) hitting percentage.
Along with Ficker, Kelsey Benorden finished with 19 kills and 18 digs to tally the lone double-double for the Bulldogs. Raquel Miotto tallied 21 digs to lead the defense and Rachel Guinane dished out 46 assists.
In game one, both teams went toe-to-toe for the entire frame and endured 10 ties and four lead changes until the Bulldogs used a 4-0 run to lead 26-22 after an attach error by the Dolphins. JU cut the margin to 28-27 after a kill by Bendorf but the Bulldogs got a pair of kills from Benorden to take the game.
In the second frame, JU used a 5-0 run to lead 9-4 after a kill by Gruenbacher before UNCA cut the deficit to 10-9 on an attack error by the Dolphins. JU answered with runs of 3-0, 2-0, 3-0, to take an 18-11 on a kill by Merchant. The Bulldogs cut the deficit to 23-20 after a kill by Heather Burns but JU outscored UNCA, 7-4, to even the match.
In the third game, JU led throughout the game until the Bulldogs erased a four-point deficit to tie the contest, 22-22, on a kill by Ashley Wrightenberry. Both teams went through two more ties until the Dolphins used a pair of 2-0 runs to get some breathing room and take the lead in the match.
In the final game, JU led from start to finish which included a 7-0 run to begin the frame. The Bulldogs would never get closer than a six points (25-19) as the Dolphins ended the game with a 5-1 run to win the match.
JU will return to the friendly confines of Swisher Gymnasium to host Mercer on Friday at 7 p.m.
