Volleyball handles Savannah State, 3-0

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Senior outside hitter Katie Hendrian tallied a match-high 13 kills to lead the JU volleyball team to a win over Savannah State, 3-0 (30-17, 30-16, 30-18), Thursday evening at Swisher Gymnasium.

JU (16-11) finished with a match-high .364 (44-12-88) hitting percentage and racked up a program record with 19 service aces in a three-game match. Savannah State (4-22) managed only a -.010 hitting percentage in the contest.

"We have a few things to work on before we face Florida Gulf Coast," said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. "We are going to focus on a good practice tomorrow and then we will see how things play out."

Hendrian hit .500 (13-2-22) from the floor and also racked up a team-high seven digs. Junior outside hitter Kesley Clark rounded out the Dolphins in double-figure kills (12) while adding six digs.

Freshman outside hitter Abby Gruenbacher chipped in with seven kills while hitting .455 (7-2-11) from the floor. Sophomore outside hitter Nicki Kent added six kills, a 1.000 (6-0-6) hitting percentage and a match-high six aces. Senior middle blocker Melissa Merchant finished with a career-high four aces and senior defensive specialist Katie O'Brien had a career-high 12 assists.

Danielle Sampson led the Tigers with six kills while Daniel Richardson hit a team-high .400 (5-1-10) from the floor. Adreanna Grider racked up a match-high nine digs to lead the defense.

JU will look to earn a share of the Atlantic Sun Conference regular season title as the Dolphins host first-place Florida Gulf Coast on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Swisher Gymnasium. The match can be seen live on as part of ASun.TV.
