Jan. 10, 2008
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU volleyball team announced the signing of outside hitter Kathryn Kane (Wheaton, Ill.) and UCF libero transfer Brittany Turnbull (Jacksonville, Fla.), head coach Shaun Kupferberg announced.
The duo will join a young Dolphin squad which reached the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament Championship match last season.
"Brittany and Kathryn will add a new dimension to our team," said Kupferberg. "They are great student-athletes who will be great additions to our program both on and off the court. Both ladies are dynamic athletes that can change a game and we are looking forward to seeing them next season. "
Kane, a 5-foot-11 senior from Wheaton Warrenville South High School, led the Tigers to a combined 96-17 record and a DuPage Valley Conference and regional championship in her final season. As a senior, she earned News Gazette All-State Honorable Mention and all-conference honors after tallying 106 kills and 49 blocks while playing the right side. As a junior, she garnered honorable mention all -conference accolades after tallying the seventh most blocks in school history (91) and 58 kills as a middle blocker. In club play, she was a member of 1st Alliance VBC.
"KK is a gifted athlete, but her personality is what really stands out," Kupferberg said. "Her energy is infectious and she's someone that everyone just loves to be around. Throughout high school she has played every hitting position so we are excited to see where she will fit in the puzzle."
Turnbull, 5-foot-5 transfer from UCF, will return home to join JU as a sophomore after playing in 18 matches and 62 games for the Knights. As a freshman, she averaged 2.16 digs and 0.34 aces per game, including season-high 14 digs against Colorado. In her prep career, she was a two-year starter as a setter and libero for Episcopal High School. As a senior, she earned First Coast all-area third team honors after finishing with 800 assists and leading the Eagles to the 3A regional finals. As a junior, she garnered first team all-area and all-state honorable mention accolades after setting a school record with 602 digs. In club play, she was a member of Jacksonville Junior Volleyball Association (JJVA).
"Brittany is a very mature player for her age," said Kupferberg. "She enjoys studying the game and improving herself. On the court, she is extremely quick and will make our defense much stronger. Putting her in the back row with Shelley Walroth should make us a fun team to watch next year."
JU, which earned back to back trips to the A-Sun finals under Kupferberg, finished the 2007 season with the most wins (19) since 1997, tied for the most conference wins (8) and finished with a seven-match winning streak, the most under Kupferberg.
