The JU volleyball team ran into one of the best teams in the country as No. 9 Florida downed the Dolphins for a 3-0 win (20-25, 15-25, 6-25) on Friday at the Campus USA Credit Invitational.

Betsy Smith had six kills to lead the Gators (4-0) to their fourth consecutive straight set victory, while Kelly Murphy, Kristy Jaeckel and Kelly Murphy each finished with five kills.

“Florida is very good squad,” JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg said. “I like how we completed early, but we were not able to keep up with them in the long haul. We will have to regroup, correct our mistakes and get back after it against Clemson later.”

The Dolphins (2-4) got a team-best six kills from sophomore Taylor Nyquist. Sophomore Kendall Courtney added 18 assists.

In the first set, sophomore Kylie Jacob recorded a kill to cut it to a 9-8 deficit. The Dolphins continued to stay with the Gators as Jacob combined with senior Kathryn Kane for a block to make it a 14-10 deficit, while junior Alison Loeppky cut it the score to 16-12 on a kill. With Florida at set point, JU made a late 5-0 run before a service error quashed the Dolphins’ rally.

In the second set, the Dolphins tied the Gators for the seventh time early (11-11) on a kill by Nyquist. It would be the closest the Dolphins would be again as the Gators broke free with a 14-4 run to take the set.

In the third set, the Gators took an early 7-0 run on an ace from Naomi Santos-Lamb. After a kill by Nyquist, the Gators closed out the match on a 13-3 run.
