Senior Alliya Drzewiecki led JU to its first home win on Saturday with 14 kills.
The JU volleyball team had three players with double-digit kills en route to a 3-1 win (25-12, 25-11, 25-27, 25-20) over South Carolina State at Swisher Gymnasium on Saturday evening.

Senior Alliya Drzewiecki led the Dolphins (6-5) with 14 kills, while sophomore Kylie Jacob and freshman Nadia Booker each tallied 11 kills. Sophomore Kendall Courtney had six kills to go along with 48 assists.

“We are happy to get the win,” JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg said. “We had several players step up and contribute tonight. I want us to have that same kind of group effort as we move forward to A-Sun play.”

The Bulldogs (4-6) got 14 kills and 11 digs from Desiree Waller and Bria Brimmer tallied 33 assists on the night.

In the first set, the Dolphins took a 10-6 lead on a kill by Booker. They extended the advantage to 19-10 on a 9-4 stretch, capped on Drzewiecki kill. The Dolphins took the set on two Bulldog errors and a kill from Booker.

In the second set, an attack error by Waller gave the Dolphins an early 11-4 lead. An ace by senior Ashley August capped an 11-5 run for a 22-9 advantage. A kill from sophomore Alyssa Robertson helped secure the set for JU.

Trailing 14-13 in the third set, the Dolphins broke up a 4-0 Bulldogs’ run with a Jacob kill. The Dolphins tried to pull away, but a kill from Elizabeth Webb later tied it a 22-22. The Bulldogs broke up the Dolphins’ set point on a kill from Peri Ligons before taking the set on a JU attack error.

In the fourth set, the Bulldogs tied it at 13-13 on a Waller kill. The Dolphins broke free with a 7-3 run, capped on a Courtney kill, for a 20-16 advantage. An ace by freshman Cari Whitmire and kill from Drzewiecki helped quash the Bulldogs and gave JU the win.
