The Dolphins got back to their winning ways as freshman setter Ashley August notched her second double-double of the season and senior outside hitter Sara Bendorf tallied a match-high 16 kills to lead the JU volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-20, 25-10, 27-25) win over Stetson, Saturday evening at the Edmunds Center.

JU (11-6, 7-3) hit .292 (48-15-113) in the contest, including at least .300 in sets one and three. SU (2-15, 0-10) hit .054 (21-16-93) but tallied a match-high eight team blocks.

“We hit well tonight,” said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. “Our defense looked good and our serve/receive went very well. Now we get to come home for some matches and try to build some momentum.”

August finished the game with match-high 26 assists and tied for the match-high with 12 digs. Bendorf tallied a .324 (16-4-37) hitting percentage and six digs while sophomore outside hitter Aidan Yeager chipped in with 12 kills and two blocks. Junior libero Shelley Walroth had 12 digs and junior outside hitter Brooke Singleton recorded four kills, a .444 (4-0-9) hitting percentage and seven digs.

Laura Boyd led the Hatters with seven kills and a .375 (7-1-16) hitting percentage and a match-high four blocks. Rebecca Orzechowicz notched 10 digs and Sam Freeman added four blocks to also lead the defense.

In the first set, Stetson took an early 9-4 lead but the Dolphins answered back to take a 15-13 advantage after being fueled by a 5-0 run. JU increased the margin to 20-16 with an ace by August and would lead by no less than three points the rest of the way to open a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, the Dolphins came out on fire with a 5-0 lead but the Hatters cut the deficit to 8-7 with a kill by Stephanie Canfield. JU answered with a 3-0 run, capped by a ball handling error by Jennica Hagberg, to make it 11-7. The Dolphins increased the advantage to 17-8 with a 6-0 run, capped by a kill by Yeager, and then outscored the Hatters 8-2 the rest of the way to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the final frame, both teams battled through five ties until the Hatters used a 6-0 run to take a 16-10 advantage. JU answered back with a 10-4 run, capped by a kill by junior middle blocker Nicki Kent, to tie the contest (20-20) but Stetson ran off two straight points to lead 22-20. After JU tied the match again, this time with a 2-0 run, both squads battled through three more ties until a 2-0 run by the Dolphins ended the match.

JU returns to the friendly confines of Swisher Gymnasium next week beginning with a non-conference match against Seattle on Oct. 17 at 7 p.m.
