Senior outside hitter Sara Bendorf tallied a match-high 17 kills and a .448 (17-4-29) hitting percentage while junior libero Shelley Walroth added a match-high 17 digs to lead the JU volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-16) win over USC Upstate, Friday evening at Swisher Gymnasium.

JU (15-8, 10-5) hit .290 in the contest, including over .300 in sets one and three, and finished the contest with only 11 errors (eight service, two ball handling, one receiving). USCU (7-17, 3-12) hit .009 and finished the contest with 13 errors (six receiving, four serving, three ball handling).

“We played well tonight and it was a solid team effort,” said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. “Our serve and serve/receive were very strong, which helped us keep control of the match. We have a big contest tomorrow and right now we are trying to fine tune things as we come to the end of our very long journey.”

Along with Bendorf, sophomore outside hitter Aidan Yeager had nine kill and hit .333 (9-3-18). Junior outside hitter Brooke Singleton had eight digs, six kills and a .312 (6-1-16) hitting percentage. Sophomore defensive specialist Brittany Turnbull added three digs and an ace in the contest.

Kelsie Queen led the Spartans with six kills while Jovana Lubura led the defense with nine digs. Sandra Campbell also added a match high three blocks and four kills.

In the first set, JU jumped out to an early 6-3 lead after a ball handling error by Jenna Leslie before using a 6-1 run to open up a 12-4 advantage. JU increased the lead to 14-5 after an attack error by Morgan Thomas. The Dolphins made it 21-10 with a kill by junior middle blocker Nicki Kent as JU went on to outscore the Spartans, 4-1, to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

In the second set, both teams went through three ties until JU used a 7-1 run to take a 10-4 advantage. Upstate cut the deficit to 13-9 after an attack error by the Dolphins but JU used a 6-2 run, capped by an attack error by Queen, to make it 19-11. The Spartans cut the margin to 23-18 after an attack error by the Dolphins but JU would use a service error by Karla Andree and an ace by junior middle blocker Nicki Kent to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the final frame, JU took a 7-3 lead after an attack error by Queen but the Spartans cut the margin to 10-8 with a kill by Campbell. The Dolphins pushed the margin to 14-9 with a block by sophomore middle blocker Abby Gruenbacher and Yeager and then made it 21-12 with a 7-3 run. The Spartans cut the deficit to 23-16 after an attack error by the Dolphins but JU got a kill by sophomore middle blocker Brittany Lehman and Singleton to seal the match.

JU complete the weekend at Swisher Gymnasium against East Tennessee State on Saturday at 5 p.m.
