Volleyball blanks Stetson, 3-0, on Senior Night
Senior outside hitter Sara Bendorf finished with a match-high 14 kills and junior libero Shelley Walroth added a match-high 29 digs to lead the JU volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-14, 25-22, 25-14) win over Stetson, Friday evening for Senior Night at Swisher Gymnasium.
JU (18-9, 13-6) hit .223 as a team, finished with a match-high six blocks and had 18 errors on the evening (nine service, five receiving, four ball handling). SU (4-23, 1-18) hit .058 in the match and finished with 14 errors (nine receiving, three ball handling, two service).
“Stetson controlled the ball very well and made us earn our points tonight,” said JU head coach Shaun Kupferberg. "Our offense showed some signs of life and Shelley picked up a lot of digs for us to help get the win tonight."
Along with Bendorf, junior outside hitter Brooke Singleton finished with 13 kills, eight digs and three aces. Sophomore middle blocker Abby Gruenbacher chipped in with eight kills and match-highs with four blocks and a .467 (8-1-15) hitting percentage. Junior middle blocker Nicki Kent also tallied six digs, five kills and three blocks.
Rebecca Orzechowicz led the Hatters with six kills, 11 digs and two blocks. Jennica Hagberg added 11 assists and 10 digs while Melanie Boyer chipped in with eight digs.
In the first set, JU jumped out to a 4-1 lead on a kill by Kent and would use a 7-0 run to open up a 12-3 advantage. Stetson would cut the margin to 14-7 with a kill by Orzechowicz but the Dolphins answered with a 5-0 run, capped by an ace by Singleton to make it 19-7. The Hatters would get not closer than nine points (22-13) as JU took a 1-0 lead in the match with a kill by Singleton.
In the second frame, JU took a 4-1 lead on a kill by Bendorf and would use a 4-0 run to open up a 9-3 lead. The Hatters would answer with a 7-1 run to even the contest (10-10) and both teams would battle through four more ties until Stetson used a 2-0 run to take a 16-14 advantage. Both teams traded points until the Dolphins used a 4-0 run, capped by an attack error by Stephanie Canfield, to take a 20-18 lead. The Hatters answered with a 2-0 run to even the contest (20-20) but JU answered with a 4-0 run, capped by a kill by Singleton, to make it 24-20. After two points by Stetson, sophomore middle blocker Brittany Lehman’s kill gave JU a 2-0 lead in the match.
In the final frame, JU opened the set with a 7-0 run and then increased the margin to 9-1 with a kill by Bendorf. The Hatters answered with a 3-0 run to cut the deficit to 9-4 but the Dolphins increased the lead to 12-5 with an ace by Bendorf. Stetson cut the margin to 13-8 with an ace by Sarah Sears but JU used a 9-5 run, fueled by two Singleton aces, to make it 21-10. JU would cruise the rest of the way as Singleton’s kill closed out the match for the Dolphins.
JU ends the regular season at home on Saturday at 5 p.m. against first-place Florida Gulf Coast.
