Wisconsin downed the JU volleyball team in three sets (17-25, 22-25, 22-25) at the Spring Hill Suites Invitational Saturday morning at Hanner Fieldhouse.

Mary Ording and Ellen Chapman each finished with 12 kills to lead the Badgers (11-1) offense. Freshman Gabriela Roman posted 10 kills to lead the Dolphins (2-10) who finished hitting .129 (31-18-101) for the match.

“This was a tough way to start the day,” JU head coach Michelle Collier said. “We had some opportunities to make some runs, but we couldn’t take advantage of them. We will regroup and look to end the weekend on a high note.”

In the first set, the Badgers used a 7-2 run, capped on an error, to take a 14-9 lead. Senior Alison Loeppky added a kill for JU before Courtney Thomas helped extended Wisconsin’s lead to 21-14 with a block. Wisconsin closed out the set getting an attack error and block to take a 1-0 advantage.

In the second set, the Dolphins took a 9-5 lead on a Roman kill. Sophomore Taylor Nyquist put the Dolphins up 10-7 with a kill, but the Badgers chipped away and tied the set at 19 with blocks by Thomas and Mitchell. The teams tied two more times until Chapman recorded consecutive kills to give Wisconsin the set.

In the final set, the teams stayed close until the Badgers took an 11-5 lead from an Alexis Mitchell kill. The Dolphins tied the match at 16 on a block from Loeppky and junior Kendall Courtney. Thomas recorded a kill to give the Badgers a 21-19 advantage. The Dolphins got within two twice, but the Badgers had kills from Ording and Denae Morales to secure the win. <> The Dolphins wrap the tournament tonight against host Georgia Southern at 7 p.m.
