Florida Gulf Coast remained perfect in A-Sun play with a 3-0 win (16-25, 20-25, 18-25) over the JU volleyball team Tuesday night at Alico Arena.

Olivia Mesner and Kaitlin Holm each registered 11 kills to lead the Eagles (19-7, 14-0 A-Sun) who finished with a .330 hitting percentage (41-12-88). Gigi Meyer tallied 19 assists and seven assists to help the Eagles.

“FGCU showed why they are the top team in the league,” JU head coach Michelle Collier said. “We had trouble getting into a solid rhythm against them tonight. We are still playing very well and have a tough challenge ahead of us Saturday.”

The Dolphins (7-12, 5-10) were held to a .125 hitting percentage (33-21-96) to have their winning streak snapped at three. Junior Kylie Jacob led the offense with seven kills, while sophomore Taylor Nyquist finished with six. Junior Kendall Courtney recorded 31 assists.

In the first set, the Eagles opened with a 7-2 lead on a Holm kill. Three straight Nyquist kills brought the JU deficit to 8-6. The Eagles used four JU errors to extend the lead to 13-7. After a JU timeout, FGCU took a 21-13 lead following an 8-6 stretch. Jacob countered with a kill, but the Eagles scored four of the next seven points to take the set.

In the second set, consecutive service aces by freshman Gabriela Roman gave JU an 8-1 advantage. FGCU used a 9-6 run, capped on a Holm kill, to cut the deficit to 14-10 and force a JU timeout. FGCU kept on the attack by using three more Holm kills to gain an 18-16 advantage. Senior Alison Loeppky made it a 19-18 JU deficit with a kill before the Eagles closed the set on a 6-2 run for the 2-0 lead.

In the third set, two Mesner kills gave the Eagles an early 10-5 lead. The Eagles extended the lead to 17-9 from a Holm kill. FGCU secured the final points for the set on two JU errors to earn the win.

The Dolphins end their current road trip Saturday with a short trip to cross-town rival North Florida. First serve for this SunTrust River City Rumble installment is at 5 p.m.
