Volleyball sweeps Bethune-Cookman, 3-0
The JU volleyball team officially wrapped the non-conference slate with a 3-0 win (25-21, 25-17, 25-17) against Bethune-Cookman Wednesday night at historic Moore Gymnasium.
Freshman Sammie Strausbaugh posted 14 kills and nine digs to pace the Dolphins (8-22) offense. Junior Kylie Jacob finished with nine kills, while freshman Thayla Pagan and junior Kendall Courtney also had nine digs. Sophomore Taylor Nyquist finished with five service aces.
“This was a good win,” JU head coach Michelle Collier said. “We needed some good momentum heading into the weekend. Everyone played well. We need two more good efforts this weekend to hopefully snag an A-Sun Tournament berth.”
The Wildcats (5-22) got 11 kills from Krysta Gardner, while Janeen Davis recorded 12 digs in the loss.
In the first set, the Wildcats pulled away with a 12-10 lead from a Gardner kill. Nyquist recorded four straight aces to give the Dolphins a 15-12 advantage. After a Bethune-Cookman kill, the Dolphins racked up four more points for a 19-13 lead. The Wildcats battled by pulling within four, 23-19, on consecutive JU errors. After a timeout, the Dolphins got a kill from freshman Gabriela Roman and a Jacob kill to finally win the set.
In the second set, JU gained a 13-10 lead from a Jacob kill. The Dolphins used an 8-4 run, capped on a Nyquist ace, to extend the lead to 21-14. Jacob had a kill and a block with Strausbaugh to end the set in JU’s favor.
In the third set, the Dolphins took an 11-10 advantage from a block by Jacob and freshman Emily Laskelle. After a timeout, JU extended the lead to 16-12 on an attack error. The Wildcats cut the deficit to 17-14 on a block, but the Dolphins closed the set on an 8-3 run to secure the win.
The Dolphins wrap the home schedule starting Friday against USC Upstate at 7 p.m. in Swisher Gymnasium. For the third straight season, the Dolphins will need to win one of their final two matches to earn a berth into the A-Sun Tournament.
Friday’s match is also Senior Night with a special pregame ceremony honoring JU seniors Alison Loeppky and Nicole Teplitz. Fans can follow the action through the live links at JUDolphins.com.
