JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- The Jacksonville University volleyball team continued its perfect season with a straight set victory over Charleston Southern on Friday night. Behind a match-high 18 kills from Sammie Strausbaugh and 40 assists from Kendall Courtney, the Dolphins (4-0) defeated the Buccaneers (25-16, 25-22, 25-15).

“It was great seeing a lot of our student-athletes here supporting us in our first home match,” said Head Coach Michelle Collier. “In the beginning of the match we said no one was going to outwork us on our home court and I think we played really hard and deserved the win.”

The Dolphins put forth a solid offensive attack that left them a meager .001 percent away from matching the program record for team hitting percentage in a three-set match. Last year against Savannah State the Dolphins recorded a .483 hitting percentage.

Joining Strausbaugh on the attack was Taylor Nyquist who finished with 10 kills. Courtney, Kylie Jacob, Emily Laskelle and Gabriela Roman all contributed at least five kills each.

Charleston Southern’s attack leader Katrina Houston was a bit quiet in the matchup. After recording 20 kills and just two errors earlier in the day against the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes, Houston was reduced to seven kills and errors against the Dolphins.

Most of the match saw the teams trading shots back and forth until the Dolphins would go on a scoring run that the Bucs couldn’t catch up to.  The second match was the closest score of the three; tied at 21, Nyquist separated the team with a pair of kills and the Dolphins took the set, 25-22.

Jacksonville returns to action Saturday morning when they play Mississippi Valley State at 10 a.m. They will conclude the Hilton-Garden Inn Invitational in a rematch against Florida Atlantic at 6 p.m.
