MIAMI, Fla. -- A perfect 2013 remained intact for the Jacksonville volleyball team on Thursday as the Dolphins outlasted host FIU (3-4) in a five set thriller to improve to 7-0 on the season. The Fins won 25-22, 23-25, 20-25, 25-23, 15-13.
Sophomore Sammie Strausbaugh (Dover, Pa.) led the way with 16 kills and 13 digs while serving up two of her three aces in the deciding fifth set. Kylie Jacob (Fayetteville, Ga.) added 13 kills and Alyssa Robertson (Pompano Beach, Fla) contributed 12 kills and five blocks allowing Jacksonville to continue its best start since the 1978 season.
JU claimed the first set 25-22 before FIU grabbed a 2-1 advantage by taking the next two sets 23-25 and 20-25. Faced with their first must win set of the year, the Dolphins took the lead for good at 21-20 on a Jacob kill. Strausbaugh eventually closed out the set victory with one of her four kills in the stanza to even the count at 2-2.
The momentum carried over to the fifth set as the Dolphins jumped ahead with a 4-0 spurt right out of the gate that was capped off by an ace from Strausbaugh. FIU clawed back in to tie the set at 11-11 and again at 13-13 before a kill from Robertson and an attack error by the Panthers ended the set and match.
Action at the FIU tournament continues on Friday with JU squaring off against South Dakota State at 11:00 a.m. and Chattanooga at 5:00 pm.
