Mercer's Second Half Surge Downs Jacksonville

Macon, Ga. - Mercer (9-7, 4-3) outscored Jacksonville 36-19 in the second half Saturday night to down the Dolphins 62-45 in TAAC women's basketball action. The loss was the second straight for Jacksonville (2-14, 1-7) after their first conference win of the season against UCF on January 15th at home.

Both teams struggled to find their shooting touch in the first half as the Dolphins and Bears went to the break tied at 26. Unfortunately for JU, the Dolphins shooting problems got worse in the second 20 minutes as Jacksonville hit only 6 of 25 (24%) from the floor to finish the game at 31.4% (16-51). Meanwhile, the Bears were able to hit 13-32 (40.6%) from the floor in the second half to post their fourth TAAC win of the season. In addition to outscoring JU, the Bears won the battle of the boards, out-rebounding JU 41-33 overall and 13-7 at the offensive end.

Freshman Lexie Richards led the Dolphins with 13 points, while classmate Milica Miljkovic added a career-high 10 points and nine rebounds. Freshman point guard Kelly Stevenson played a season-high 25 minutes for the Dolphins, scoring two points, collecting a career-high six rebounds and handing out a team-record six assists as the Dolphins turned the ball over a season low 23 times in the game. The Dolphins' leading scoring, junior Angela Walker, struggled from the floor for the second straight game, hitting just 3-11 from the floor.

Mercer was led by Mia Washington's 19 points, 14 coming in the decisive second half. Tracy Henry added 10 points for the Bears, while Jo Shaw checked in with nine points and a team-high nine rebounds to go along with five assists.

Jacksonville will return to action on Thursday, January 27th at 7:00 PM when they host Stetson.
