Samford Downs Jacksonville 88-61 In Birmingham

Birmingham, Ala. - Samford University (9-4, 4-0) remained undefeated in the Trans America Athletic Conference with an 88-61 victory over Jacksonville (1-11, 0-4) in women's basketball action Saturday afternoon. With the win, the third year program Bulldogs assured themselves of first place in the TAAC for the second straight week for the first time in their program's history.

Samford jumped out to an early lead on Jacksonville as the Bulldogs beat the Dolphins' trapping zone defense for a number of easy baskets to build an 18-4 lead with 13:22 left in the half. The team's played evenly the rest of the first half as Samford held a 38-22 lead at the break. The 38 first half points by the Bulldogs were the most scored on the Dolphins in a first half this season.

The Bulldogs matched their offensive effort in the game's second session, scoring 50 points en route to their 27 point victory. The 50 second half points and 88 total points were also season highs for a JU opponent. The Dolphins had entered the game ranked second in the nation in field goal percentage defense and were among the nation's leaders in scoring defense.

Junior Angela Walker led the Dolphins with 13 points, freshman Lexie Richards added 12 points and junior Pam Evans posted 10 points and 10 rebounds, her second double-double of the season. Freshman Kelly Stevenson saw action in her second straight game after missing the Dolphins first 10 games with an injury. Stevenson collected three points, two assists and three steals in just 15 minutes of play for JU. Sophomore Lana Labura continued to play well off the Jacksonville bench, netting nine points on 3-4 from the floor while collecting four rebounds in 17 minutes.

Preseason All-TAAC selection Jodi Morris and Cortney Moore led the Bulldogs with 14 points each, Moore hitting on 7-8 from the floor. Mesha Tisdel and Suzette Pittman added 10 points apiece in a well balanced Samford attack. As a team the Bulldogs shot 53.5% from the floor, the best shooting effort of the season by a Jacksonville opponent.

Jacksonville will return to action on Thursday, January 13th at 7:00 P.M. when they host Florida Atlantic in a TAAC match-up.
