February 5, 2000

DeLand, Fla. - Jacksonville University (4-15, 3-7) completed the season series sweep of Stetson (7-12, 3-7) with a 79-63 victory over the Hatters in TAAC women's basketball in DeLand on Saturday evening. The win was the Dolphins' second straight in league play, both over Stetson, and third in their last five TAAC games.

Despite shooting 12-23 (52.2%) from the floor in the game's first half, Jacksonville found themselves down by one (31-30) at the break as the result of 15 turnovers. JU continued their torrid shooting in the game's second session, knocking down 14-26 (53.8%), but it was their protection of the ball, only nine second half turnovers, that keyed the victory.

After tying the game at 51-51 for the seventh and last time of the game, JU outscored the Hatters 17-4 over the next five minutes to build a 13 point lead (68-55) with 3:12 left in the game. Three threes and a perfect 6-6 at the line keyed the Dolphins' run. As a team the Dolphins hit 15-18 (83.3%) at the line in the second half and 17-22 (77.3%) for the game. Meanwhile, Stetson managed just 8-16 (50.0%) from the line in the second half and hit only two threes compared to Jacksonville's season-high 10 threes in the game.

Leading the way for the Dolphins was freshman Lexie Richards with a career, and program-high 25 points on 9-10 shooting from the floor. Richards, who also handed out five assists for JU, hit 7-8 from beyond the arc as the Dolphins combined to hit 10-15 (66.7%) from three-point land. Junior Angela Walker added 18 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals for the Dolphins, the ninth time in the last 11 games she has reached double-figures in scoring. Freshman Kelly Stevenson joined Richards and Walker in double-figures with a career-high 15 points, all coming in the game's final 4:49. Stevenson completed a perfect night shooting, hitting 1-1 from the field, a three, and 12-12 from the free throw line to ice the game for Jacksonville. Freshmen Kat Sungy and Milica Miljkovic garnered seven rebounds each to join Walker with a team-high.

Ginny Bencivenga (14), Audrey Kull (12) and preseason All-TAAC guard Cher Dyson (10) led the way for the Hatters who have now dropped four out of their last five games in league play.

The Dolphins will return to action on Thursday, February 10th at 7:00 PM when they host Mercer in a key TAAC match-up.
