High Point Holds Off Jacksonville 44-43

Jacksonville, Fla. - The Dolphins let the their first halftime lead of the season slip away as High Point (2-8) handed Jacksonville (0-7) a 44-43 defeat in women's basketball Sunday afternoon at Swisher Gymnasium. Junior Lexie Richards led the first half charge for the Dolphins, hitting on 4-5 from beyond the three point line to lead all scorers at the half with 12. However, the JU point guard was held scoreless in the game's second session as High Point tightened their perimeter defense and secured the victory.

After posting a 25-19 lead after the game's first 20 minutes, the Dolphins opened the second half by scoring just two points in the first six minutes of the second half, as the Panthers took a 29-27 lead with 14:29 left in the game. High Point stretched their lead to six (36-30) with 8:26 to go, before JU junior Angela Walker hit a three point basket just 19 seconds later to cut the Panther lead in half. The Dolphins stayed with in four the rest of the way, twice having chances to regain the lead, but High Point hung on to claim their second victory of the season.

Richards' 12 points was a game-high, while freshman Milica Miljkovic added seven points for Jacksonville. Dolphin Sophomore Lana Labura posted a game-high seven rebounds and recorded a career-high four steals. As a team JU shot just 26.7% (12-45) from the floor, including 33.3% (7-21) from beyond the arc. The Dolphins' shooting woes were evident at the free-throw line as well, JU hitting on 12-20 (60.0%) for the game.

High Point was led by Toni Vick's 10 points, while Annie Miller chipped in with eight points, six rebounds and six assists. Mary Brewer also collected eight points for the Panthers, while recording four steals and five rebounds. As a team High Point was held to 16-57 (28.1%) from the floor, including 5-18 (27.8%) from long-range. Despite their poor shooting from the floor, the Panthers made the best of their attempts from the free-throw line, knocking down 7-8 (87.5%) for the game.

JU will return to action on Monday, December 27th at 5:00 when they take on Norfolk State in the Holiday Inn Express Tournament hosted by SUNY-Stony Brook in Stony Brook, N.Y.
