Nov. 1, 2000

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Jacksonville University women's basketball team tips off its 2000-01 exhibition season Thursday, Nov. 2, when they play host to the Smokey Mountain Swarm at 7:30 p.m. in Swisher Gymnasium.

The Dolphins return nine letterwinners - including all five starters from a year ago - as they head into year two of the women's basketball era at JU.

"This will be a good chance for us to see how far we've come as a team," head coach Melissa Taketa said. "We've had a good preseason and I'm looking forward to finally playing some outside competition."

Thursday night's game will be the first of two exhibitions the Dolphins will play before tipping off their regular season on Saturday, Nov. 18 against Davidson College at 5 p.m . in Swisher Gymnasium.

Headlining the list of returnees for the Dolphins are senior forward Angela Walker (Orlando, Fla.) and sophomore guard Lexie Richards (Mercer Island, Wash). Last season, Walker earned third-team All-TAAC honors after leading the team in scoring (10.7 ppg), rebounding average (6.0 rpg) and steals (51). Richards, meanwhile, earned TAAC All-Freshman recognition after pacing the Dolphins and finishing third in the TAAC in 3-point field goal percentage with a .415 clip (68-of-164) and finished second on the club in scoring (9.9 ppg).

JU opened its exhibition season against the Swarm last season as well, and will be looking to avenge a hard-fought 76-71 loss. Milica Miljkovic (Kikinda, Yugoslavia) led the way for JU with 13 points and 12 rebounds. Niki Washington of Smokey Mountain led all scorers with 21 points while tying Miljkovic for game-high rebound honors with 12.

After the contest against Smokey Mountain, JU will conclude its exhibition season on Monday, Nov. 3 when the Dolphins play host to the Norkopping Flamingos at 7 p.m. in Swisher Gymnasium.
