Women's Basketball To Tip Off The Regular Season Against Davidson
Nov. 17, 2000
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU women's basketball team tips off its regular season on Saturday, Nov. 18 when the Dolphins play host to Davidson College (0-0) at 5 p.m. in Swisher Gymnasium.
The women's basketball game will be the second game of a triple-header at JU as the football team takes on Monmouth at 1 p.m at D.B. Milne Field, and the men's basketball team tips off its regular season against Coastal Carolina at 7:30 p.m. in Swisher Gym.
JU went 1-1 during the exhibition season with a 103-50 win over the Smokey Mountain Swarm on Nov. 2 and a 91-65 loss to the Norrkoping (Sweden) Flamingos on Nov. 13. During the preseason, the Dolphins averaged 84.0 points per game outrebounded their opponents by an average of 3.5 boards a contest.
With nine letterwinners returning from last season, including all five starters, JU looks to build on the experiences the team gained during the inaugural season of 1999-2000. Leading the way for the Dolphins are a pair of All-TAAC honorees in forward Angela Walker (Orlando, Fla.) and guard Lexie Richards (Mercer Island, Wash.).
Walker, a senior, earned third-team All-TAAC honors last season after leading JU in scoring (10.7 ppg), rebounding average (tied with 6.0 rpg), field goals made (102), free throws made (53) and steals (51), while ranking second in total rebounds with 156.
Richards, meanwhile, earned a spot on the TAAC All-Freshman Team after pacing the squad and ranking third in the league with a .415 field goal percentage from beyond the 3-point arc. Richards led the team in assists (71) and free throw percentage (.857), while finishing second on the club in scoring (9.9 ppg) and field goal percentage (.422).
After the Davidson contest, the Dolphins return to action on Wednesday, Nov. 22 when they play host to Bethune-Cookman at 7 p.m. in Swisher Gymnasium.
