Women's Hoops Falls At Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 79-52

Dec. 20, 2000

Box Score

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Senior forward Angela Walker (Orlando, Fla.) scored a season-high 23 points and sophomore post player Kat Sungy (Arvada, Colo.) tallied her third double-double of the year, but it was not enough as the Jacksonville University women's basketball team fell to Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 79-52, Wednesday night at Circle K Court.

Walker, who tallied 19 points in the second half and connected on 10-of-16 shots from the field during the game, led all players in scoring while Sungy had 10 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Walker fell one rebound shy of a double-double with nine.

The Dolphins got off to a rough start, however. After trading baskets early on, the Islander defense held JU without a basket for nearly nine minutes. During that stretch, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi went on a 14-0 and never really let JU back in the game.

JU trailed 38-22 at halftime, but fought back to cut the lead to 10 at 39-29 with 18:16 to go and again at 41-31 with 17:06 left to play. But the Dolphins never could cut the lead to single digits.

The Islanders went on an 11-0 run in the next 3:59 to swell the lead to 21, and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi never looked back.

Missed shots by the Dolphins early on hurt JU's chances as the squad hit only 9-of-29 shots in the first half. Things got better in the second half for the club as they hit 46.4 percent of their shots on 13-of-28 shooting.

Detra Johnson led the Islanders' balanced offensive attack with 16 points while Roberta Plaza was next with nine. Kendra Smith and Jessie Monlux shared team-high rebounding honors with six, and ShaKayla Hawkins led all players with a game-high five assists.

The Dolphins return to action on Thursday, Dec. 28 when they take on Winthrop at 7 p.m. in the friendly confines of Swisher Gymnasium.
