Dec. 28, 2000

Box Score

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore guard Lexie Richards (Mercer Island, Wash.) scored 18 points on six 3-point baskets and sophomore post player Kat Sungy had 10 points and seven rebounds to lead the Jacksonville University women's basketball team past Winthrop, 57-52, Thursday night in Swisher Gymnasium.

The win comes on the one-year anniversary of the Dolphins' inaugural win, an 83-53 victory over Bethune-Cookman College in the consolation game of the Holiday Inn Express Tournament in Stony Brook, N.Y.

The win improved JU to 3-6 on the year, snapping a four-game losing streak, as the Dolphins avenged last year's season opening loss to the Lady Eagles in JU's inaugural game. Winthrop, meanwhile, fell to 2-7.

Richards connected on 6-of-12 shots from the field for the evening, including a 6-for-11 mark from beyond the 3-point arc, as JU shot 18-of-52 for the game (34.6 percent). The Dolphins outrebounded the Lady Eagles 42-38, including freshman forward Yolisha Jackson (Clarksville, Tenn.) who tied Sungy for team-high rebounding honors with seven.

The game was a back-and-forth struggle for much of the early goings. JU held a 5-4 lead with 15:52 to play in the first half, but Winthrop would take the lead on the ensuing possession and not relinquish the lead throughout the rest of the half.

Leading 26-21 at the break, Winthrop fought off several runs by the Dolphins. JU cut the lead to one twice and eventually tied the score at 37-37 with 10:02 to play on a free throw by senior point guard Shannon Wynn (Wasilla, Alaska).

Winthrop retook the lead 20 seconds later, and would jump out to a four-point advantage at 41-37 with 8:42 to play. But a Richards 3-pointer cut the lead to one 42 seconds later and JU took its first lead of the second half with 6:46 to go on a layup by sophomore forward Milica Miljkovic (Kikinda, Yugoslavia).

The lead changed hands three times after that, but the Dolphins took the lead for good on Richards' final 3-point basket with 2:52 to go to give JU a 50-47 lead. The lead swelled to as many as seven, but the Lady Eagles cut the lead to just two at 54-52 on a 3-pointer by Kimberly Cairnes with 22 seconds left in regulation. But a 3-point play by senior forward Angela Walker (Orlando, Fla) with 9.9 second to go to account for the final points.

Cairnes led Winthrop with 16 points while Crystal Greene had 12 and Meredith Smith had 10. Greene led all players with 12 rebounds.

The Dolphins return to action on Saturday, Dec. 30 when they take on the College of Charleston at 5 p.m. in Swisher Gymnasium. The game will be the second of a JU basketball double-header as the men's team takes on Lehigh at 2 p.m.
