Jan. 22, 2001

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Sophomore post player Kat Sungy (Arvada, Colo.) earned Trans America Athletic Conference Co-Player-of-the-Week honors, as announced by the league office this afternoon.

Sungy averaged 15.0 points and 12.5 rebounds during the two-game week, and helped the Dolphins win their first two TAAC games of the year with a 66-62 victory over UCF on Jan. 18 and a 69-60 win over Florida Atlantic on Jan. 20.

Against the Golden Knights, Sungy shot a season-high 72.7 percent from the field on 8-of-11 shooting, and shot an impressive 54.2 percent from the field during the week. On Saturday against the Owls, she recorded her fifth double-double of the season with a team-high 14 points and a game-best 17 rebounds (one shy of her own school-record of 18 set earlier this season against Bethune-Cookman).

Along the way, Sungy set JU's single-season offensive rebounding record and now has 56 for the year, breaking the mark of 54 set by teammate Angela Walker (Orlando, Fla.) last season in 27 games. She now has 150 total rebounds on the season, and is just 19 boards away from tying the single-season record of 169 set by Milica Miljkovic (Kikinda, Yugoslavia) in 1999-2000.

Sungy leads the TAAC in total rebounds with 9.4 per game and in defensive rebounds with a 5.9 average. She also ranks second in offensive rebounds (3.5 rpg), is fifth in field goal percentage (.532 on 75-of-141 shooting) and is the league's ninth-leading scorer (11.5 ppg).

Sungy shared the weekly honor with Georgia State's Leslie McElrath who averaged 23.5 points per game to help the Lady Panthers beat their two opponents by a combined 91 points.

The Dolphins return to action on Thursday when they travel to Macon, Ga., to take on TAAC rival Mercer University at 7 p.m. in Porter Gym.
