Women's Basketball Falls to FAU, 94-76

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Freshman guard Yvette Jackson (Sarasota, Fla.) scored a career-high 19 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Jacksonville women's basketball team, but the pressure of the Florida Atlantic defense was too much as the Lady Owls downed the Dolphins, 94-76, in Atlantic Sun Conference action Thursday night at Swisher Gymnasium.
Kat Sungy (Arvada, Colo.) just missed her fourth double-double of the season with nine points, 10 rebounds and a tied her career high with four assists. Her 10 boards pushed her over 500 for her career and she is now just four points shy of 600. Sungy is JU's all-time leader in both categories. Junior guard Lexie Richards (Mercer Island, Wash.), in only her second game back, hit 3-of-6 from beyond the arc to finish with 15 points. Yolisha Jackson had 12 points and seven boards and has now scored in double figures in nine of the Dolphins' 10 games. Aisha Stewart came off the bench to score 10 points, while Kara Donnell had nine points, nine rebounds and a career-high four blocked shots.
The Dolphins (1-9, 0-3 Atlantic Sun) shot 50 percent (28-for-56) from the field, while the Lady Owls (5-6, 3-0) made 41.5 percent (34-for-82) from the floor. FAU hit 18-of-22 from the line and 8-of-20 from three-point range, while JU connected on 12-of-16 free throws and 8-of-13 from long range. The Dolphins were outrebounded for only the fourth time this season, 42-38.
In the first half, FAU jumped out to a 15-point lead with 8:59 left, but the Dolphins battled back and outscored the Lady Owls 23-10 over the next seven minutes to cut the deficit to two at 35-33 with 1:56 left. FAU bounced back with a run of their own and took a 46-36 lead into the locker room.
JU whittled the lead down to five with 12:28 to play, but FAU put the game away with a 13-2 run late in the game. At that point, the Lady Owls led, 89-68, their largest lead of the night. Kristy Halvorsen led FAU with 16 points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Chantale Jones and LaKeita Lee scored 13 points apiece and Tamica Pierce added 10. Jones also had seven steals.
The Dolphins continue A-Sun action when they host UCF Saturday in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday at 4:30 p.m. at Swisher Gymnasium. The JU men face Jacksonville State in the first game at 2 p.m.
