JU Women Fall to Georgia State, 90-60

ATLANTA - After hanging with hot-shooting Georgia State for the first half, the Jacksonville women's basketball team was turned back by the Lady Panthers, 90-60, Saturday in Atlantic Sun Conference action at GSU Arena.

Yolisha Jackson (Clarksville, Tenn.) led the Dolphins with 18 points, two shy of her career high, and also added six rebounds. Kat Sungy (Arvada, Colo.) had 10 points and nine boards, while Kara Donnell (Mattoon, Ill.) collected a game-high 12 rebounds.

GSU shot 55.1 percent (38-for-69) from the field for the game and made 5-of-16 from three-point range. JU shot 51.7 percent (15-for-29) in the first half but only 40.0 percent (10-for-25) in the second to finish at 46.3 percent. The Dolphins hit 5-of-14 from long range but only went to the line six times, making five shots. JU won the rebounding battle for the ninth time in 13 games, 33-29.

JU only trailed by four points with 7:24 remaining in the first half, but Dee Dee Merriweather hit a trey and Marica Maddox hit back-to-back threes to give the Lady Panthers a 40-26 advantage with 4:50 left to play. The Dolphins faced their largest deficit of the first half when they went down by 15 with 2:45, but they regrouped to score the final seven points of the period to go into the locker room down, 43-35.

The Lady Panthers put the game away early in the second half behind Evita Rogers, who was held scoreless in the first half but exploded for 11 points in the first 10 minutes of the second.

Maddox and Patechia Hartman led GSU with 17 points each and Maddox dished out 10 assists, while Hartman handed out eight. Angelina Miller added 16 points, while Holly Coates had 13 and Rogers 11. The Lady Panthers had 18 steals, which led to a huge advantage on the fast break.

GSU improves to 7-4, 3-1 in A-Sun action, while JU falls to 1-12, 0-6 in league play. The Dolphins continue their conference road trip when they face Campbell Monday night at 7 p.m. in Buies Creek, N.C.
