Women's Basketball Falls to Red-Hot Long Island, 68-53

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Long Island shot 56 percent from the field, including 11-of-22 from 3-point range, to down the Jacksonville University women's basketball team, 68-53, in non-conference action Monday night at Swisher Gymnasium. Sophomore center Kara Donnell (Mattoon, Ill.) led the Dolphins with a season-high 17 points and six rebounds, while senior forward Kat Sungy (Arvada, Colo.) added 14 points, five boards and five assists. Tamica Dudley poured in a game-high 22 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Blackbirds.

JU (2-7) shot 50 percent from the field for the game, but couldn't hang with LIU from outside, hitting only 4-of-17 from behind the arc. The Blackbirds (1-8) also outrebounded the Dolphins, 24-19, and outscored the Dolphins in points off turnovers, 25-12.

Amber Wirth added 14 points for LIU, hitting 4-of-8 from long range, while Nicki Winston and Jessica Brookes hit three treys each to finish with nine points.

LIU shot 64 percent from the field and made 8-of-15 threes in the first half to jump out to a 43-26 lead at the break. The Blackbirds led by as many as 25 with 6:33 remaining, before the Dolphins ended the game on a 14-4 run.

The Dolphins return to action when they host Valparaiso on Friday at 7 p.m. at Swisher Gymnasium for their final tune-up before Atlantic Sun Conference play begins.
