MACON, Ga. - Jacksonville University sophomore forward Kara Donnell (Mattoon, Ill.) led the Dolphins with 14 points and had five rebounds, but the Dolphins couldn't cool off Mercer in the second half as the Bears pulled off a 70-54 victory in Atlantic Sun Conference action Thursday night at Porter Gym. Senior center Veronique McMillian (Los Angeles, Calif.) scored a season-high 13 points off the bench.
Mercer shot 53 percent in the second half, while holding JU to only 13 shots. The Dolphins held their last at 42-41 with 12:52 to go, but the Dolphins went seven minutes without a field goal to allow the Bears to take a nine-point lead. Mercer pushed the lead to as many as 19 on two occasions before settling for the 16-point win.
Jo Shaw led Mercer (3-12, 1-3 A-Sun) with 14 points, while Jo Jo Carter and April Dyer added 12 each. With the scored tied, 16-16 with 8:30 left in the first half, JU (2-13, 0-4) went on a 10-0 run and led 34-27 at the half. Junior guard Lexie Richards (Mercer Island, Wash.) scored all nine of her points on three three-pointers in the first half, while McMillian had nine of her 13 in the period. The Dolphins return to action when they travel to face Troy State on Saturday at 3 p.m. at Trojan Arena.
