Women's Basketball Cruises Past Samford, 52-41

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU senior forward Kat Sungy (Arvada, Colo.) recorded her 10th double-double of the season with a game-high 16 points and tied her season high with 14 rebounds to lead the Dolphins to a 52-41 victory over Samford in Atlantic Sun Conference action Saturday afternoon at Swisher Gymnasium. Junior guard Katie McDonald (Chandler, Ariz.) added 12 points, five steals, three rebounds and two assists in helping the Dolphins win for the third time in their last four games.

The Dolphins (5-15, 3-6 A-Sun) shot 51 percent from the field for the game, including 4-of-11 from behind the arc, while holding Samford to 26 percent shooting, including 4-of-17 from long range. JU also outrebounded Samford, 40-26, getting a career-high nine boards from sophomore forward Lauren Woodman (Port Moody, Canada), who also had four assists, and eight rebounds from sophomore center Kara Donnell (Mattoon, Ill.), who also had four blocked shots. Junior guard Lexie Richards (Mercer Island, Wash.) was held without a three-pointer for the first time in 11 games but had four assists, while freshman guard Tara Eddy (Vienna, Va.) scored seven points in only eight minutes.

JU never trailed in the game and started the game with a 20-8 run over the first 12 minutes of the first half, then went on an 8-0 run with four minutes left, during which freshman guard Gemma McInally (Newcastle upon Tyne, England) hit a jumper and a three on back-to-back possessions, to give the Dolphins a 21-point lead. JU led, 35-14, at the break.

The Dolphins pushed the lead to as many as 25 early in the second half, their largest lead of the game, but Samford slowly chipped away. JU led 52-32 with 6:40 left, but Samford held the Dolphins scoreless the rest of the way and scored the final nine points of the game to cut the deficit to 11. Che Walker's basket at the buzzer kept the Bulldogs from being held to the lowest point total ever for a Dolphin opponent.

Giovanni Price led Samford (5-15, 1-8) with 13 points and four rebounds.
