Women's Basketball Downed By Florida Atlantic, 78-54

BOCA RATON, Fla. - Florida Atlantic jumped out to an early lead and never let up as the Lady Owls downed the JU women's basketball team, 78-54, in Atlantic Sun Conference play Thursday night at FAU Gymnasium. Senior forward Kat Sungy (Arvada, Colo.) hit 11-of-13 from the free-throw line and led the Dolphins with 17 points and four rebounds.

Freshman guard Tara Eddy (Vienna, Va.) added 11 points, five rebounds and had a career-high five steals, while junior guard Katie McDonald (Chandler, Ariz.) added 10 points. Sophomore center Kara Donnell (Mattoon, Ill.) had three blocks, giving her 29 in the last 11 games. Janka Deckerova hit 3-of-5 from three-point range to lead FAU (13-13, 11-4 A-Sun) with 13 points, while Jennifer Olson added 12 and DeeAnna Hanscom had 11.

The Lady Owls shot 43 percent from the field for the game and outrebounded the Dolphins (6-20, 4-11), 44-27, including 20-8 on the offensive glass. JU shot only 31 percent from the field, but hit 27-of-36 from the free-throw line. The two teams also combined for 44 fouls and 62 turnovers.

FAU jumped out to a 26-5 lead as the Lady Owls held the Dolphins without a field goal for the first 9:11 of the first half, then pushed the lead to as many as 27 before settling for a 49-26 lead at the break. The Dolphins would get no closer than 19 the rest of the way.

The Dolphins return to action in their season finale against UCF on Saturday at 3 p.m. at UCF Arena in Orlando.
