Women's Basketball Loses Exhibition, 76-70
Nov. 16, 2003
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU sophomore guard Sheena Carpenter (Augusta, Ga.) had a team-high 16 points, while senior guard Lexie Richards (Mercer Island, Wash.) finished with 10 points in a 76-70 loss to TEAM REEBOK, in exhibition action on Sunday afternoon at Swisher Gymnasium.
The Dolphins begin the regular season against Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on Friday, Nov. 21 at 4:30 p.m. The game will be followed by the JU men's opener at 7:00 p.m. in Swisher Gymnasium. Junior forward Yolisha Jackson (Clarksville, Tenn.) had eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds in her first game in nearly a year, while freshman center Talia Johnson (Sardis, Ga.) had nine points and six rebounds in her first collegiate game.
Freshman forward Megan Wallen (Leesburg, Ind.) added seven points in just five minutes of play, shooting 3-of-3 from the field, including a three pointer.
JU led 67-64 with just over three minutes left in the game, but a jumper and a breakaway lay-up by Jessica Scala put TEAM REEBOK up, 68-67. TEAM REEBOK extended its lead to 70-67, but Jackson hit a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 70-69 at 2:28. That was as close as the Dolphins would come, committing two costly turnovers and managing just one field goal attempt in the final 1:30.
After falling behind, 5-0, the Dolphins took a 13-12 lead on a Carpenter free throw at 13:50 of the first half. JU led until 13:39 of the second frame, when TEAM REEBOK put together an 8-0 run to pull ahead, 50-48. The teams traded buckets down the stretch with senior guard Katie McDonald (Chandler, Ariz.) giving JU a 67-64 lead with four minutes to go, but the more experienced opposition, led by UCF grad Erin Paige who finished with a game-high 21 points, went on a 12-3 run to close out the game.
