Rally Falls Short in 64-56 Loss to Samford in Women's Basketball

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU junior forward Yolisha Jackson (Clarksville, Tenn.) scored a team-high 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while sophomore guard Sheena Carpenter (Augusta, Ga.) tallied 12 points and six rebounds, but the Dolphins' late comeback against Samford fell short in a 64-56 loss at Swisher Gymnasium Saturday night.

Senior guard Lexie Richards (Mercer Island, Wash.) scored a season-high nine points, including a pair of key three-pointers in the second half, while senior guard Katie McDonald (Chandler, Ariz.) had four points and eight rebounds.

After JU trailed by double digits for much of the night, Richards hit a clutch three-pointer from the corner to make it 58-54 Bulldogs with 1:47 remaining. Samford turned around and hit two free throws but Carpenter responded with a pull-up jumper with 28 seconds left to make it 60-56. JU was forced to foul down the stretch and the Bulldogs took advantage, knocking down all four free throw attempts to ice the game. JU falls to 2-3 on the season, while Samford improves to 4-2.

JU trailed by as many as 16 points in the second half, down 52-36 with 9:16 remaining, before Jackson converted on a three-point play to spark a 15-6 run as the Dolphins cut the lead to 58-51 with 2:00 remaining.

Samford outscored JU 24-12 in the first 10 minutes thanks to the play of Bulldog forward Alex Munday, who finished with a game-high 18 points. Munday scored 16 of her 18 points in the first half as Samford took a 38-29 lead into the intermission. Jackson was also dominant in the first, scoring 12 of her 15 points while shooting 4-for-8 from the floor and hitting 4-for-5 from the free throw line.

JU opens Atlantic Sun Conference play against Stetson on Wednesday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. at Swisher Gymnasium.
