Women's Basketball Falls to Mercer, 64-51

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - JU sophomore guard Sheena Carpenter (Augusta, Ga.) had a career-high 21 points and nine rebounds, while freshman center Talia Johnson (Sardis, Ga.) had a career-high five blocks, but it wasn't enough as Mercer downed the Dolphins 64-51 Saturday evening at Swisher Gymnasium. Junior guard Rebecca Montz (Erath, La.) also added 14 points for JU (2-13, 0-8 A-Sun), which is still seeking its first conference win, while Mercer (8-8, 6-3 A-Sun) moves into a tie for third place in the conference.

Mercer put together a 12-4 run to extend its 13 point halftime lead to 50-29 at 15:54. Senior guard Katie McDonald (Chandler, Ariz.) scored four points in a 9-0 JU run to pull the Dolphins to within 50-39 with 8:37 to play, but the Bears responded by holding the Dolphins without a field goal for the next 4:08 to push the lead back to 16.

JU trailed 7-4 early until Montz hit back-to-back three-pointers to spark a 10-2 Dolphin run and put JU ahead 14-9 at 12:35 of the first half. The Bears clawed back to take a 21-20 lead at the 6:17 mark before finishing the half on a 17-5 run , holding the Dolphins to just one field goal in the final 8:13.

JU plays the first of three consecutive road games at Campbell on Thursday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m.
