Women's Basketball Ends 18-Game Losing Streak with 56-52 Win Over Troy State

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Junior forward Yolisha Jackson (Clarksville, Tenn.) tied a career-high with 24 points, while grabbing eight rebounds as JU held Troy State to just 19 points in the second half to snap an 18-game losing streak with a 56-52 win Thursday night at Swisher Gymnasium. Senior guard Katie McDonald (Chandler, Ariz.) had six points, including two free throws with 25 seconds remaining, to go along with two blocks.

The win is JU's (3-20, 1-15 A-Sun) first conference victory of the season and the team's first win since December 7, 2003. Troy State (8-14, 7-8 A-Sun) loses for the first time in seven meetings with the Dolphins.

JU led by one, 53-52 with 28 seconds remaining in the second half when junior guard Rebecca Montz (Erath, La.) was sent to the free throw line to shoot two. Montz hit the first free throw, putting JU up 54-52, but missed her second free throw. Jackson fought for position under the boards and knocked the ball off a defender to give JU possession. McDonald was fouled on the ensuing inbounds pass and hit two free throws with 25 seconds left on the clock to ice it 56-52 Dolphins.

The Dolphins took the lead for good midway through the second half when Jackson nailed a three-pointer with the score tied, at 38, putting JU up 41-38 at 11:41. Freshman center Chamara Warrick (Jacksonville, Fla.) hit from just outside the lane at 5:28 to make it 52-47 as JU led by as many as five points down the stretch.

The Dolphins trailed 33-31 at the intermission. Jackson accounted for 18 of JU's 31 first-half points, while shooting 60 percent from the field and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line.

JU hosts Lipscomb on Thursday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. at Swisher Gymnasium.
