Women's Basketball opens 2006-07 season against Flagler

Oct. 30, 2006

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The JU women's basketball team will open its 2006-07 season by hosting Flager on Thursday at 7 p.m. in an exhibition contest at Swisher Gymnasium.

After leading JU to its most overall and conference wins and the program's first Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament bid since 2001, Jill Dunn's team will feature a deeper, more athletic lineup as the Dolphins added five freshmen in the offseason.

"We are excited about the two exhibition games because it will give us some idea of where our team is at before the season starts," said Dunn. "I know the players are really looking forward to the games because this will give them an opportunity to play against someone other than their teammates."

Junior forward Ashley Williams, a preseason all-conference selection this year, earned first team all-conference honors last season after averaging 17.1 points, 7.5 rebounds, 1.9 blocks and 1.7 steals per game. She also set a JU program single-season record with 478 points.

Also returning for the Dolphins are senior guard Jenarie Davis, sophomore guards Regina Omoite and DaVina Hamilton and sophomore forwards Virginia Gregoire and Kelly Ford. Sophomore guard Crystal Ayers will make her first appearance on the floor after sitting out last season.

Leading the infusion of youth for the Dolphins this season will be forward Crystal Grable (Macon, Ga.), forward/center Danielle Gray (Stone Mountain, Ga.), guard Courtney Jackson (Atlanta, Ga.), forward Desarae Johnson (Greer, S.C.) and guard Teneshia Ruff (Columbus, Ga.) as true freshmen.

JU will host its final exhibition contest on Wednesday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m. against Valdosta State before opening the regular season at Charleston Southern on Monday, Nov. 13, at 8 p.m.
