Nov. 17, 2006
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Three Dolphins scored in double figures to help erase a five point second-half deficit as the JU women's basketball team pulled away with four minutes remaining to defeat South Carolina State in their home opener, 66-56, Friday evening at Swisher Gymnasium.
JU (2-0) is off to its best start in program history despite the Dolphins shooting only 36.4 percent from the field (24-66), 50 percent from the foul line (11-22) and losing the rebounding battle (46-44). SCSU (0-2) took a three point lead into the break after shooting 45 percent but cooled off in the second frame after connecting on only 6-of-28 (.214) from the field.
Trailing 45-40 with 13:01 remaining, JU used a 7-0 to lead 47-45 on a jumper by junior forward Ashley Williams with 10:20 left. The Dolphins increased the lead to 54-48 after another jumper by Williams at the 6:34 mark but the Lady Bulldogs tied the contest with 4:25 remaining by using a 6-0 run. The Dolphins would take the lead for good after a three-pointer by sophomore guard Virginia Gregoire with 3:20 left as JU used a 9-2 run to end the contest. In the final four minutes, JU shot 4-for-6 from the floor while holding the Lady Bulldogs to a 0-for-3 effort which included four turnovers.
"We couldn't quite get into the flow of the game tonight," said JU head coach Jill Dunn. "No matter what we tried, we didn't have five players who were able to connect with each other on the floor. Fortunately, we were able to find a way to make plays in the final four minutes and come away with the win."
Williams, who struggled to find her shot due to constant triple teams, finished with a game-high 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the field to go along with seven rebounds. Gregoire tallied 14 points, six rebounds, six assists and two steals, while sophomore guard DaVina Hamilton finished with 12 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals. Freshman guard Courtney Jackson finished with eight points and five rebounds while freshman center Danielle Gray added a game-high 11 rebounds.
Janelle Moore led the Lady Bulldogs with 10 points before fouling out in the second half. Rasheeda Jones added eight points and a game-high 11 rebounds, while Brittany Baity tallied five points, nine rebounds, five assists and a game-high five steals.
In the first half, the two teams went through 10 lead changes as SCSU jumped out to an early 4-0 lead at the 18:19 mark. JU answered with a 10-2 run, sparked by a three-pointer by Hamilton, to make it 10-6 at the 16:06 mark. The Lady Bulldogs tied the contest, 10-10, but the Dolphins used a 7-0 run to take a 17-10 advantage with 12:20 remaining.
SCSU recapture the lead, 21-20, after an 11-3 run which was capped by a jumper by Moore at the 6:35 mark. Each team would trade leads on the next eight possessions before the Lady Bulldogs took a 34-28 lead on a 6-0 run with 2:53 remaining. The Dolphins would cut the lead in half before the break when Williams hit a pair of jumpers to spark a 4-1 run.
JU will next face former A-Sun foe UCF on Tuesday, Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. Swisher Gymnasium.
