Women's Basketball sets new records with 66-59 win over Stetson
Feb. 24, 2007
DELAND, Fla. - A strong second half and a career-high tying 23 points by sophomore guard Virginia Gregoire helped the Dolphins tie a program record with six consecutive victories as the JU women's basketball team defeated Stetson, 66-59, Saturday afternoon at the Edmonds Center.
JU (18-8, 12-4), which also set a new program record with four-consecutive road wins, shot 48 percent (13-27) in the second half and finished with only 13 turnovers to rally from a six-point halftime deficit.
Stetson (5-22, 5-11), which held a game-high 17-point lead in the first half, turned the ball over 24 times (which was helped by 15 JU steals) to fall to the Dolphins for the second straight year on its home floor. Trailing by 12 points (36-24) at the 18:29 mark, JU used a 22-9 run to take a 46-45 lead after a pair of free throws by sophomore guard DaVina Hamilton. The Dolphins increased the lead to 55-49 with 4:51 remaining after a three-pointer by Gregoire. Stetson cut the deficit to 58-55 with 36 seconds remaining after a jumper by Kellie Olsen but sophomore guard Regina Omoite connected on eight consecutive free throws to put the game out of reach.
"It wasn't our best game, but we showed a lot of character and found a way to win in the end," said JU head coach Jill Dunn. "We made some timely runs and our defense gave us opportunities to score. We need to take this momentum into the final week of the regular season with Belmont and Lipscomb coming to our home floor."
Gregoire tied her career high after connecting on 9-of-20 shots, including 3-of-6 from beyond the arc. Omoite added 15 points, including a career-high 8-of-8 from the charity stripe, and three steals. Hamilton and Gregoire each chipped in with four steals.
Janene Maclin led Stetson with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Olson (11) and Sharnesha Smith (10) rounded out the Lady Hatters with double-figure points.
In the first half, Stetson took advantage of a slow start by JU to take an early 8-2 advantage at the 17:31 mark after a jumper by Olsen. The Lady Hatters pushed the lead to 14-6 at the 12:44 mark after a jumper by Vlendy Roldan.
Stetson pushed the advantage to a game-high 17 points (24-7) with a 10-1 run, which was capped by a pair of free throws by Maclin with 7:07 remaining. JU answered with a 17-6 run to end the first half, which was finished off with a three by Gregoire with 1:06 left, to make it a 30-24 deficit at the break.
The Dolphins will complete the 2006-07 regular season with a pair of games at Swisher Gymnasium, beginning with first-place Belmont on Thursday at 7 p.m.
