Stetson upsets women's hoops with 3-pointer at the buzzer, 60-57

DeLAND, Fla. - Sharnesha Smith's 3-pointer with 22 seconds remaining gave Stetson the lead and the Hatters got JU to miss its final three shots in pulling out a 60-57 upset at the Edmunds Center on Saturday night.

Smith's fateful 3-pointer and the two free throws with 0.8 seconds left gave her 10 points on the evening.

In a foul plagued contest, the two teams combined for 47 fouls and shot 50 free throws. JU finished 14-of-21 at the stripe while Stetson was 15-of-29.

"We did a solid job of defending for most of the game, but we didn't step out on the shooter at the end and she made us pay," said JU head coach Jill Dunn. "We've got to shake this off quickly because we start a new season on Wednesday."

Trailing 57-53 with 1:51 to go in the game, the Hatters scored the final seven points of the game - starting with a basket by Jessica Conner with 1:36 to go to cut the deficit to two.

After a defensive stop for Stetson, Smith stepped up stroked the 3-pointer to put the Hatters on top.

JU had one last chance, actually three, but couldn't the shot to fall and the Hatters were able to seal the upset.

Neither team was able to pull away in the see-saw affair as JU led by as many as eight early in the game and Stetson's largest lead came at the final horn.

Conner joined Smith in double figures with a team-high 11.

JU got a game-high 12 points from DaVina Hamilton and 11 points for Courtney Jackson. Virginia Gregoire and Ashley Williams were held to 11 points on 4-of-21 shooting.

Jacksonville took a 30-27 lead at the end of the first half as Gregoire hit a 3-pointer with 1:05 left until intermission.

The Dolphins will open the A-Sun Tournament on Wednesday, with their opponent and time to be determined by the results of Saturday's games.
