The JU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) has established a reputation as a strong supporter of the local community and this year continues to be no different as the JU women’s basketball team volunteered for the First Coast Heart Walk last weekend.

Sponsored by the American Heart Association, First Coast Heart Walk is one of several Start! Heart Walks around the country. Each walker is asked to raise money from friends and family, coworkers, business acquaintances, association members, etc. The money that is raised each year will be used to fund the valuable research, education and advocacy efforts of the American Heart Association.

“The First Coast Heart Walk was a good event for out team to be able to help with,” said JU head coach Jill Dunn. “It supports a great cause and we were glad to be a part of something that helps so many people. It’s also a way for us to get out into the community and represent our program and Jacksonville University.”

To kick off the upcoming academic semester at JU, the Dolphin squads helped with loading trucks with water to give to the participants, loaded ice bags and were in charge of directing traffic for parking at Jacksonville Memorial Stadium.

“The First Coast Heart Walk was a great experience,” said senior guard and SAAC vice president DaVina Hamilton. “The parking lot at the stadium was completely full, so I know it was a success in raising money for the American Heart Association. Our team and SAAC are always looking for ways to give back to the community and we look forward to more opportunities as the year goes on.”

Over the past three years, the JU SAAC has become a fixture in Jacksonville as JU Athletics continues its commitment to change lives inside and out. JU works with Daniel Memorial, Florida’s oldest child-serving agency that assists troubled youth and their families. The Dolphins are involved with the foundation’s annual back-to-school supply drive for children desperately in need of basic school items as the new school year arrives. The Dolphin baseball and softball teams also volunteered for the Daniel Memorial Rock N’ Ride last weekend.
